AAYK Football Club commenced their 2026 Nationwide League One (NLO 1) campaign on a positive note, securing a well-deserved 1–0 victory over Igbajo United in a closely contested encounter.

The team showed early attacking intent, with Olaoluwa Pelumi creating the first meaningful opportunity in the opening minutes, though he was unable to convert. Shortly after, in the 14th minute, Makinde Iyanu delivered a precise pass into the box, but Pelumi’s effort was expertly denied by the opposition goalkeeper.

AAYK’s persistence paid off when Sheriff was fouled inside the penalty area, earning the team a spot-kick. Adedeji Ridwan stepped up with confidence and calmly converted, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give AAYK a deserved lead.
The solitary goal separated both sides at halftime, with AAYK heading into the break 1–0 ahead.

In the second half, Falaye Dusin demonstrated excellent composure and vision in midfield, helping AAYK maintain control and dictate the tempo of the game. Tactical substitutions followed in the 68th minute, as Akorede and Tomiwa replaced Pelumi and Ridwan to inject fresh energy into the side.

AAYK continued to press for a second goal, coming close in the 74th minute when Femi’s powerful header struck the crossbar. Further chances followed, including a late effort from Akorede in the 82nd minute, which was well saved by the Igbajo goalkeeper.
Despite sustained pressure from the opposition in the closing stages, AAYK’s defense remained resolute, ensuring the team held on for a vital opening-day victory.
Attention now turns to the next fixture against Ase Ridyem FC, as AAYK look to build on this strong start and maintain momentum in the league campaign.
